The Problem

The client is a medium-sized contract brewery that produces and packages products for its clients. During warm weather months, the heat and humidity within the packaging area adversely affects the packaging process. The client requested an evaluation of the existing ventilation and to provide recommendations to reduce the heat and humidity.

QES Evaluation

  • Packaging area under substantial negative pressure causing infiltration of outside air.
  • Fugitive emissions from the pasteurizer are increasing area humidity.
  • Multiple fans needed maintenance. Filters in make-up air units required replacement.
  • Insufficient air exchanges were being provided to maintain desired temperature and humidity.

Recommendations
& Implementation

  • Modify existing source hoods.
  • Replace existing exhaust fans with higher capacity fans.
  • Replace the existing make-up air unit with a unit of higher capacity.
  • Rework ducting to improve air distribution.
  • Remove axial area fans adversely affecting air distribution and capture.
Following review of the evaluation recommendations, the client requested that QES revise the recommendations to include a ‘stepped’ approach. The recommendations were then broken down into 3 steps. Step 1 provided the least cost and greatest impact items. Each subsequent step proposed increasing costly tasks.

Upon issue of the stepped recommendations, the client requested that QES provide a full cost estimate for each step. This was completed and included capital, equipment, material, labor, and operating costs.

By evaluating the existing ventilation within the Brewery, we were able to provide a tailored solution that significantly improved the packaging room environment and working conditions. This case underscores the importance of evaluating existing ventilation prior to completing design. Also, by including recommendations with a stepped approach and cost estimate, the client was able to better budget and schedule the work.
